I fundamentally disagree with this kind of take. If someone is having their ‘oh shit’ moment because a mainstream media figure is being targeted by the regime, that’s good. Don’t dunk on them for not reacting sooner just to make yourself feel cooler than ‘the libs.’

You know what, I’m guilty of this exact thing. I’ve been pissed because this has been obviously fascism for sometime now, and it angers me how much it feels like I’m one of the few who paid attention to history while the ignoramuses acted like I was overreacting.

However the truth is you’re right. I turned my anger on late coming allies and vented my frustration unfairly in their direction. Ultimately it’s better late than never and every ally counts in the fight against fascism. After all a lot of us are about to die, or worse.

We’re saturated in information and it’s easy to see so many sources. Some people do accidentally find themselves in echo chambers but you won’t much hear of them because they don’t go online often.

It’s anyone on this planet’s job to follow news and be connected with how their country is being run. You don’t need to be a political scientist or economist but if a US citizen who was being responsible only just now figured out that something is wrong they are objectively pretty stupid. Stupid doesn’t mean undeserving of love or security or anything like that but oh my god do not tell me I’m the bad guy for being so fucking tired of this shit.

Not sure libs get to complain about the lightest bit of ribbing when they’ve been warned about this for years. Not sure libs get to complain about the lightest bit of ribbing when they’ve enabled people being ‘disappeared’ off the streets. Not sure libs get to complain about the lightest bit of ribbing when they still take no accountability for the world being the way it is

Hard disagree. The US is cooked. Arguably it’s been cooked since the election, but there was a world in which the US public banded together and blocked the regime from taking any effective action. But now that Trump has consolidated power and set all kinds of precedents that fascism will be answered by nothing crickets and ass-licking, there’s no stopping him through legal means anymore.

So please allow me to regard these “oh shit it that bad?? :((” people with the highest level of disgust and contempt. I don’t owe fascist enablers anything. Just like I don’t owe anything but contempt to the Germans who woke up a morning of 1936 and realized “hey guys maybe we fucked it”.

The people who just now realized that Trump is a fascist aren’t “on the left”. They are NPCs. It doesn’t matter what anyone says about them or to them, the world will literally end before these schmucks lift a finger to fight it.

The idea that “concerned centrists” exist to be convinced with Discourse not to support fascists is literal thought poison. Anyone who was going to resist Trump has already chosen sides. Everyone else is just a passive observer or a literal enabler (instead of whatever you think that term means).

Make no mistake, the time for discourse is over. Whether the American antifascists continue the fight illegally through direct action or bend over is up to them. Historical precedent (Italy, Germany, Russia, Turkey, China…) doesn’t favor victory, but I would love to be proven wrong. However the idea that you’re doing anything by appealing to the most politically disconnected’s hearts and minds is laughable.

If we’re being real here, your average person is either scared or feels so overwhelmed that they are checked out until they are directly needed by a friend or family member. If someone is talking now, it’s because their back is against the wall.

I’m sure many people don’t want to sound like the ‘boy who cried wolf’, only to not be taken seriously when their claims appear overblown about the scale of an issue. The big problem is that it has been a death by a thousand cuts. If it’s not a big problem close to home, then there are less people willing to step in for that specific issue. Especially so when personal relationships are at risk by taking a preemptive stand.

Certainly some people have been put off from voicing their concerns when how they voice it has gotten them bashed on by the very people they are supporting as well.

Personally, I believe that when push comes to shove that people are looking out for each other. With how things have been going, more people are calling out the wrongs and support for injustice is being chipped away at while everyone is starting to feel affected.

I don’t owe anyone, anything. Least of all a “you tried” gold star for failing at even the bare minimum.

This random thread on one of the least conservative and most politically-engaged parts of the internet is not somewhere that I’m expecting to find or engage with one of these hypothetical schmucks. I’m merely venting my contempt for them.

There is no “divide and conquer” strategy by the way. That’s just something you made up. Divided into what and what? The politically active left hasn’t really changed course and everyone else just. doesn’t. give. a. single. flying. fuck. that their country is being run into the ground by a literal demented fascist.

I don’t know what the winning strategy is but it certainly doesn’t involve convincing the people who are so far disconnected from reality that they just realized that Trump is a fascist. WW3 will break out long before anyone convinces even a single one of these clueless morons to take meaningful action.

That’s actually the ‘thorn’ symbol, representative of the ‘th’ sound. It was used in old English, with the example everyone might know being for the word ‘the’. It was spelled þe, with ‘y’ being used as a placeholder representation of thorn, and so thus we got “ye olde”.

Could be an intentional stylistic choice, could be that they are Icelandic (as thorn is still used in their modern alphabet iirc), but it’s arguably not technically incorrect.

If the point is that using thorn (þ) then we should also expect the use of anglo saxon runes.

the rest of the text is a transliteration of the opening of beowulf (back?) into runes. Although navy seals copypasta would also have been a stupid gag to do as well.

I think the grace you are extending is admirable. That said, I personally know people who I’ve been explaining this to and have sent articles to. If you go back far enough in my comment history I commented on a post about a person who teaches about fascism at a prestigious university leaving the US due to fascism. I mentioned sending that article to people who were still doubting. The fact of the matter is that people will only see what they want to see. Every day I tell myself I’m chipping away at the blindness, but I don’t have any evidence to support that. It’s been months, if not years counting from the start of his first run. Whatever does the trick is great, but some people’s brains are just not willing to see it. They’ll admit he’s bad and they would never vote for him, but a fascist? Cue hemming and hawing. It’s like that meme from Westworld. I really do try to extend grace because the “it couldn’t happen here”, or American exceptionalism, or whatever else obviously runs deep, but I can say from personal experience it’s not always the lack of information. Some people really just don’t want to see what’s right in front of them. It’s unfortunately a very well documented part of the human experience.

Yea, that’s basically my whole point. People are so used to thinking that, they’re unwilling to see what’s happening around them for what it is. I don’t think it makes them bad people, though obviously it can lead to bad outcomes, they’re just struggling with things we all struggle with. But when I struggle with my own ignorance, or incuriosity, or cognitive dissonance it generally does not lead to enabling fascism, so I like to think. I hope that if it did people would not give up on attempting to educate and help me. People are flawed creatures and unfortunately our society and technology have far outpaced what we can be reasonably capable of understanding or reasoning through instinctively. I hope things get better, but I don’t see that happening without people really taking the time to educate others and meet them where they’re at.

Yeah that’s frustrating. I think some world views are just too ingrained. Like some phrase or idea is just so true that it’s considered an axiom rather than a conclusion.

I’ve learned I’m in quite the minority believing that folks don’t have as much control over their beliefs as we think they do. Or especially the application of that idea. I don’t think it is someone’s fault that they are racist. And I don’t think they need to have magically realized how important it is to try and be informed. Who (that they’d listen to) is going to tell them to do that? Their conservative parent’s? Their conservative friends? The conservatives they listen to online?

It’s a tough nut to crack. I think folks get frustrated with it and want to blame someone for things not working.

I do want to say that I see all that frustration and anger is very very very valid. People are getting harmed by these beliefs. I’m also sorry that trying to educate folks has been so tough in your case.

I think part of the frustration is that we’ve convinced ourselves that humans run on logic. I blame the Romans. I’m probably wrong on placing that blame.

May we all find the empathy you’re extending. It’s truly a daily struggle. Regardless, blaming the Romans is always a good move, so I’m on board there. Down with the Romans!

Best of luck with it all. Keep fighting the good fight.

Thanks for the encouragement. I usually get push back on these ideas, so it really gives me motivation hearing you say all that.

I don’t think I can agree with that logic when literally one Internet search could course correct these people on most of the issues they are choosing to be on the wrong side of. They don’t want to know what the truth is because it doesn’t fit their emotional narrative.

I find that to be a very weak argument.

Say I make fun of a racist. If they’re just a poor propagandized individual who finally realizes their act, should I not shame them? Should I not ensure that they realize the depth of their behavior, the depth of their shame?

Shrugs I like to keep records. I don’t like letting people off the hook after they shit the bed and force everyone else to clean it up while they figure out they don’t like how it smells. I think that’s weak behavior and a big part of the reason we’re here today.

Edit: I’m ok with letting children off the hook. Kids are fucking dumb.
