The world’s leaders looked at history, and instead of saying “we won’t make these mistakes again”, they said “we can do it better”.

Memes@lemmy.ml•More than half of US families are one paycheck away from homelessness.
97·7 days agoIf one paycheck is all that stands between half of the people and homelessness, can it really be called the “middle” class?

Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon is forcibly upgrading Prime members to Alexa Plus, and users are not happyEnglish
51·10 days agoForced upgrades (or downgrades) really are the worst. Same for opt-out services instead of opt-in. Give choice back to the customer goddammit!

Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Once beset by pollution, Beijing's skies are clearer than ever thanks to EVsEnglish
17·12 days agoThere’s more than just CO2 coming from combustion engines though, like nitrogen and sulfur containing compounds, which can in turn cause secondary pollution. Cumulatively, I think those pollutants have a bigger effect on human health than the road particles. Also, these road particles still get ripped up by regular cars, even if it’s to a lesser extent. So overall I’m still convinced that EVs are a step in the right direction. We can’t know for sure until more studies are performed.

221·12 days agoI’d imagine the amount of road particles ripped up is less than the amount of CO2, NOx, ozone and other pollutants and fine particles emitted by combustion engines, but I’m no expert. Only time will tell, but at least short-term the results seem positive.

44·12 days agoLike all countries, there’s some good and bad things to say, but I think that investing in renewables was a very smart move on their part.

49·12 days agoIt’s always nice to see some good news in the shitshow that is modern day life, makes me hopeful that a better future is still possible. I hope that one day Beijing (and the rest of the world) can go back to clean air 365 days a year.

Interact with them in person. Men and women write a lot of polarising shit online, but once you go outside it’s (usually) not that bad. Sure, there’s always some asshats here and there, but I feel like there’s also a lot more good people around than you realize.
