Can’t escape AI slop projects from meat proxies man. Every single open source project smells like Claude Code recently. Sad times.
I’d hate Rust, but Lunduke hates Rust because trans people write in Rust, so I like Rust just to piss off Lunduke’s homophobic ass
A month!? A lot of these fuckers pop up just over the weekend, and then are never heard from again.
Vibe coded garbage.
Rust really has a reputation. Not only it is associated with slop and snobbery (slobbery?), but also with efforts to steal skill and capability from the community by “rewrite it in Rust”-ing FOSS projects into projects with corporate-friendly licenses that enable wholesale project theft and enshittification.
Seeing slopsayers and rust aficionados fight in the comments is like coming across a baron and revenant going at it in melee.
Hell yeah.
I don’t understand why people do that when writing rust by yourself is so much fun!
Fun?
Blink twice if you’re in danger
This is one of the cases where the actual thing is amazing but the fandom for it is insufferable.
There is nothing wrong with Rust. It’s incredible. I’ve been writing code with it for years.
I’ve been writing it for a month, already released 5 projects. ; )
It does make me sad that Rust is getting so strongly associated with slop. Personally I find it a really fun language to actually program in. The language being expression-based is actually quite handy, and is a concept I wish existed in other languages too. But it is also unfortunately the most sensible language for vibe-coding too because of the performance and guardrails.
And I can’t decide if Cargo or the Python interpreter is the bigger smart ass.
Yeah well you can thank rust tools that are replacing coreutils and somehow finding their way as defaults. Eza is a prime example. Oh pretty icons but you can’t handle ls -larth, so glad you are in rust though. Rust has had a reputation before the slop.
Eza isn’t a reimplementation… it’s its own program. The name of the binary is also
ezanotls. What OS are you using that uses eza instead of ls? I have both installed and havelsaliased toezabecause I find the coloured output to be easier to read (much like syntax-highlighted code is easier to read), but I’ve never seen eza pre-installed on a system, not does it conflict with ls. Package managers let you install both. They’re different programs.you’re not gonna get a reply to these questions, because they installed eza themself and also, separately, heard about ubuntu adopting the uutils reimplementations of coreutils, which of course does not include eza.
Slop code? Missing features? Add in some arrogant wunderkinder and strong vendor push and you’ve got Systemd.
Don’t forget Claude in the contributor list!
Surprisingly not a red flag, it can be used to sabotage potential sloppers.
… is an indication of tooling, not a scarlet letter that AI contributed to the source code. A dev can include AGENTS.md to support automated maintenance (pre-commit hooks, config scripts, Github actions) without making AI part of the software. Does Makefile mean GNU Make wrote your program?
“AI. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means”
Som project intetionally poison it. TouchHLE still does it afaik.
… with hundreds of commits per day of git history.
“I built”
It’s a stone, Luigi. You didn’t make it
I once considered it a privilege to be able to program in rust. Even before, rust code can be quite terse
With LLMs now, I see code that gives my brain an anneurism and programming anti patterns that I didn’t know existed
Although I understand why LLMs prefer rust safety guarantees that make it difficult to shoot itself on the foot
don’t forget “claude rules” on the github project
*CLAUDE.md. With a misattribution clause, to hide that it’s vibe-coded.
Yes, there were projects like this featured on Hackaday the last two weeks.
Yep, and it makes it harder to be motivated to actually work on OSS when your work can just be copied and sloppified into 10 other clones the next day
I feel the opposite. I don’t care if you clone my code, I have my personal copy, just like there are many Lemmy instances.
I’m tired of getting useful programs rugpulled on me.
I wonder how the rustaceans feel about their language being associated with slop.
I’m a professional software engineer writing Rust for many years now.
Honestly, I am very happy that AI is using Rust. Much better that AI uses Rust than Python! If you think AI written Rust is bad, you have no idea how sloppy AI written Python is.
Rust is a great language. Turns out the same stuff that makes it great for humans also makes it great for agents. This is not a bad thing, this is a win-win.
Historically, Rust’s biggest disadvantage has been how hard the language is to write and how much you sometimes need to fight the compiler. This disadvantage is quite effectively mitigated by AI, since you can let the AI fight the compiler and write most of the code. So you get all the advantages that Rust brings with basically none of the downsides.
I’m just happy that Rust was invented before LLMs. If Rust did not exist before LLMs, the code the AIs would be writing would be a lot worse.
Hope that answers it.
They probably love it?
Probably the same way Unity feels about their game engine being associated with awful low budget shovelware games. The game engine was popular with low budget games because you can use the engine for free… But you have to display the “Made with Unity” splash screen for a few seconds as your game boots up. And notably, you can pay a licensing fee to remove that splash screen requirement. Basically the drug dealer special: Get the newbie game devs familiar with the engine for free, then charge the publishers to use the engine that their employees all already know.
The issue (which Unity didn’t initially foresee when they wrote their licensing terms) is that all of the shovelware games used Unity for free, and all of them had the big “Made with Unity” splash. So Unity very quickly became associated with super low effort shovelware games.
It just shows how safe the language is, LLMs have to rely on Rust to prevent all the memory bugs. Same for proof assistants
Yeah, it’s qualities that are useful for humans, too, like frontloading all the errors to compile time + good compiler error messages.
Like, I’m annoyed that people will be irrational about it, much like they associate Rust with rewrites in permissive licenses, even though it is just a tool. It entirely depends on how you use the tool.
But irrational people gonna irrational. Not much you can do about that…
Especially when Go is superior for AI generated code 🤓
I used to program in Rust. It’s a great language. I don’t do that anymore because %99.99 of Rust projects are slop nowadays.
What? Are you serious? A lot of LLM-generated text is in English too, let’s learn an obscure conlang and stop speaking English.
You know that’s not the same
How is it not?
English is the universal language. Rust isn’t. Using rust is a choice and not mandatory.
English is the universal language.
No, it isn’t. But ignoring the chauvinism there, okay, replace English with any other language that LLMs can speak.
I agree that calling it “universal” is both an exaggeration and chauvinistic, but English is the most widely spoken language in the world, both in total combined as first plus second language and it’s by far the most spoken as a second language: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_total_number_of_speakers
Rust is not in the same position among computer languages. Javascript holds that distinction, with Rust being way down, outside the top 10: https://survey.stackoverflow.co/2025/technology (it’s still outside the top 10 in the 2026 survey, but the 2025 chart is much easier to read and interpret at a glance).
So Rust is indeed not the same as English, which makes it not an apt comparison. One can much more easily completely ignore and avoid Rust as a programming language than they can ignore and avoid English as a human language. They can surely both be ignored and avoided, but it’s much more difficult to do so with English.
So instead of fixing the balance with your human Rust code, you instead associate the language as slop because people choose it for their slop projects since it’s much safer and fast?
If anything, the slop projects working efficiently and not crashing every 5 minutes is the best proof you can have that Rust is uniquely great at what it offers, every language should aim to protect the program from its weakest link programmer which is AI in this case
Language isn’t slop. Where did I say that? I literally said it’s a great language.
What criteria for using rust is now not fulfilled anymore because slop uses rust? seems like you used the language for gaining Internet points
To be honest it’s not rust. It’s more like a mentality thing and probably not logical.
It’s like not raising your hand because it has become a Nazi salute. The act of raising your hand isn’t bad but it’s associated with a bad intention.
It’s the same with Rust. It’s a great language and I actually really enjoy it. But seeing so many slop projects with it made me feel bad. That’s it.
I really don’t know why you’re getting downvoted here. It seems people just want to pile on. All you’re doing is talking about how you feel and how it’s impacting your actions. It sucks that this stuff is driving you away from Rust.
TBF, AI allowed me to make extensions for browsers for my personal use which didn’t exists anywhere. So far, so good for me.
Don’t brag about your wankin extensions unless you’re willing to share bro
This is pretty much the whole dilema though. By sharing it and putting it on GitHub you’re just making the AI slop contributions problem worse.
AI has also enabled me to do so many crazy projects I know are way beyond my skill level in a pre-AI world, and although I’d love to share some of them I’ve determined it’s just not worthwhile. Anyone technically inclined enough and sufficiently motivated can repeat the same process I did if they want similar tools. AI indeed makes mistakes, but it’s scary good at code and has completely revolutionized workflows in every CS position I know of in my company as well as every college CS friend’s company. It’s better at catching edge cases than humans and writes comments that actually explain what a function does in context of the rest of the program. It’s a shame it’s all built on stolen training data and forum suggestions from people who were trying to help others in good-faith, but the end result is an undeniably useful tool.
If you have any project ideas or clearly scoped changes to existing open source software you already use daily, it’s worth trying for yourself. Google Antigravity is my preferred tool for this sort of thing at a hobbyist level and has a relatively generous free tier. VS Code with copilot is more common professionally and although with the right models connected it’s generally better at outputting code that looks less like it’s vibe coded, I wouldn’t say it’s all that much more powerful of a tool for just getting a personal project working.
They are on github, actually. One of them allows betterbird and the likes to set email reminders (reminders as email).
