do you want lemmy to have a different userbase and culture than reddit
or NO
mine is yes, since i dont want the fediverse users to bring their former platform’s bad habits with them
I would like it to, but I don’t think it’s gonna.
The people will create the culture naturally and naturally it will evolve over time and time again.
Culture can stay the same, for all I care. The important thing is keeping the bots out.
Lemmy already has several cultures independent of Reddit.
Beans, jeans, no pooping…
Most of us are here because reddit is shit and unusable. Why would we want that here?
There are a million little slices of each site/service, where the culture in that particular community or thread or specific comment chain can differ from somewhere else.
So I would say that no, we shouldn’t make the fediverse a monoculture. And with that diversity within the fediverse, we can say that some parts will be similar to some parts of reddit, and some parts won’t. And some parts won’t be similar to some other parts of the same instance.
Well said, and I completely agree.
I think it doesn’t really matter as regarding moderation, it’s already identical to it.
Reddit has a bot culture. So, yes.
I like that Lemmy is queers and Linux and star trek
I am not queer but let’s market it as a platform for LGBT and all the wrong people will stay away
I’m neuroqueer
Is that the sequel to Gibson’s Neuromancer?
Reddit was an absolute behemoth and changed a lot over time.
I don’t want a copy of Reddit’s culture on Lemmy, but I think Lemmy’s culture will be similar because of the interaction format and because a sizable number of Lemmings I presume use Reddit and Lemmy both regularly. So it will be up to how close the viewer looks to determine if they seem the same or distinct.
I think one thing I don’t see much on Lemmy are the very tired 3+ nested comment chains that don’t add conversational value, like “and my axe!”. I’ve only seen it very occasionally, and usually in good joking taste, for example the trope “[term OP used] means this, you probably were thinking of [also incorrect word]”.
yeah, there is less ‘dad joke’ or ‘pop culture reference’ humor here.
but people didn’t send you death threats over Linux on reddit, like they do here.
I think the fediverse is a series of individuals who will create microcultures. we will not all be interacting with everyone and will be what we will be.

Funhole is great.
Funhole fucks.
Thats fair. Maybe. I act repulsive on purpose. You know I poop and ape. it is hard to sell me. I am low value by design. Preparing for the future where we are smashing the robots. It’ll develop. Whether it should or not eventually Lemmy will develop its own distinct online culture which carries across instances, topics and communities.
I know people will think it won’t have its own particular culture because it’s decentralized etc etc but I remember people saying the same thing about Reddit in like 2011. The smaller community identities either got absorbed into the larger idea of what a “redditor” is or the subs just died.
It’s a little early to say, but Lemmy culture so far has a lot of carryover of Reddit. Which makes sense considering most people here probably used Reddit first. In my experience Lemmy yo-yos between reddit but grumpier and reddit but more conversational. It reminds me a lot of early reddit in that people put more effort into their comments than other places, but also has an air of confident pseudo-intellectualism. There’s no real hivemind yet but there are generally popularized norms.
Yeah but also social media is just a medium. It’s the people who create the culture, not the medium. Sure people adapt to other people but you still start somewhere.
Tumblr was popular with young people, women and minorities, and to this day it’s overwhelmingly queer and female. Facebook was popular with young people but was quickly discovered by organisations and businesses as an easy way to be public facing, so over time it’s become sort of more professional and inclusive of older people.
What kind of people used reddit? Before it got popular, it’s culture was influenced by millennials, nerd culture and hobby forum culture. That’s what’s stayed. What kind of people use Lemmy? Well, that’s the question isn’t it?
