Okay, apparently it predates Garfield, as there was a predecessor strip, Jon:

That’s indeed one of the strip templates that renders Garfield almost unreadable to me. One character’s completely absorbed in laziness, jadedness and aloofness, and one character is completely, inanely over the top as a counterpoint. That generally doesn’t entertain me, and I can’t relate to them, but then that’s just me.
That’s actually pretty funny knowing that Garfield has actually always sucked. However,

I still have to get to more of those early Schulz strips. Mainly just quality-control and formatting issues.
I’ve enjoyed Garfield Minus Garfield for the artistic statement, but perhaps it also exposes the patterns you’re referring to.
