No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What is this colour?English
3·22 days agoTri Repetae.
I like this.
I’m a staunch atheist who likes a holiday.
Jesus was most likely born in the spring or fall a few years earlier than we recognize, if he was even a single person or existed at all. The Church, as it did every time, took existing holidays and co-opted them.
The end of the Roman calendar year is an amalgam of pagan holidays that celebrate the shortest day/longest night. A lot of the traditions we associate with Xmas are celebrating the beginning of the lengthening of the day and the return to life/springtime.
Xmas has always been a meta holiday. Most are. Enjoy the company of friends and family just as people have for millenia, no matter what banner is hanging over the mantle.

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•If every video game was to be destroyed but you had the chance to save five games, what would you choose to save?English
6·2 months agoTears of the Kingdom and Minecraft would be important to save for their infinite playability due to their physics and craft engines. Final Fantasy 6 for story. Stellaris so people could have a competitive, chess-like monster to wrap their mind around. And Bonk for TurboGrafx16 so everyone could know that game design just doesn’t happen overnight.

I’d love to see Gilda Radner come back for Weekend Update.
Annie Wersching should still be playing the Borg queen.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What percentage of the world population ages 30+ do you suppose is capable of financially supporting themselves & living & thriving independently?English
72·4 months agoIf everyone 30+ got together and collectively decided what thriving meant, then worked to reach those goals, then I think we would all be thriving.
The majority isn’t hoping for a vacation home or to send their kids to Ivy League schools or to buy a bigger boat. The majority of middle class folk I talk to regard thriving as being comfortable enough to send the kids to some postsecondary school and take a few weeks vacation out of the country. They want to have enough to retire at 65 and live a modest life, be able to spoil their grandkids a little… nothing crazy.
The ability for all of us to thrive is already here. It is only the slight matter of systemic overhaul that prevents us.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Golf Cartification of My CityEnglish
13·4 months agoIf street legal in your area, golf carts should be treated like any other small vehicle like a moped. Restrict it to 35 mph or lower roads, keep it out of bike lanes, register it if needed… the list goes on.
You mention PTC. There, they treat it like any other vehicle. You absolutely can get a DUI (and they love to hand them out). But PTC is a cart community and was born with those laws in place. In a more urban setting where carts are mixing with other light EVs, of course you should hold them to the same rules, but the laws haven’t been written yet.
Please don’t condemn an inexpensive, more sustainable mode of transportation just because a few douche-nozzles are trying to ruin it. A cart seats 4, runs off cheap rechargeables, has a small footprint and low wear and tear on our roads, is a neighborhood level form of transportation and is an attainable EV for anyone who wants to dip a toe in.
Driving across a park in your cart and tearing up the grass while being a tool should always end in a clothesline.
Edit: Sorry, I just realized I replied to the wrong person. We are arguing the same point. No animosity to you. Thumbs up.
I know her job is to work with feet, but I still hope they know each other. Well.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL there is a law called Marchetti's Constant. Humans only tolerate commutes of less than ~1 hour. Housing outside that limit will fail.English
12·5 months agoWe have a lot of sprawl here and the reasons are many. Just like Dallas and LA, we have a ton of road infrastructure and zoning laws that eat up a lot of land. We also don’t have any natural barriers, like an ocean or a mountain range, to limit our expansion. Just to keep building and add another lane. Thanks for asking.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL there is a law called Marchetti's Constant. Humans only tolerate commutes of less than ~1 hour. Housing outside that limit will fail.English
182·5 months agoMarchetti intended the constant to be 1 hour round trip, so a half-hour commute one-way. It’s an important distinction, since here in Atlanta the exurban commuter is clocking in at 1.5 hours or more into the city, well outside of what is considered tolerable. Multiply that by a million and you get some irritated people.

I agree, which is why I don’t see why people are saying the answer is 16. You add in the parentheses, you multiply, then you divide. The answer is 1.
This left-to-right business linked below is complete nonsense when it comes to equations. That’s how westerners read books, but not how math is communicated. Am I that old? Like Mr. Incredible said, did they change math!?!
