Problem is that newer systems aren’t compatible with “old” hardware. So to you know, these computers being disregarded are still functional machines, if it weren’t for Microsoft and other big techs bringing new requirements. What to do with lots of machines that doesn’t have TPM 2.0? Ditch em all, contributing to more e-waste? This thought almost rendered an paralyzed man unable to walk again, as an “old” $100k exoskeleton was deemed “out-of-warranty”.

Ubuntu isn’t as paid as Windows. Also, newer Ubuntu versions don’t need the user to throw their machine away because TPM 2.0 or NPUs are missing. Maybe these are two of the main reasons why nobody is complaining about its EOL.

Dead Internet Theory all over again.

I use Linux, but let’s be honest here: every operating system requires space to function properly. While Linux is known for taking up less storage space (especially distros such as Alpine), as you install things, it will demand space, and that includes future updates. With the recent additions of AI within Windows, 8GB is compatible with the size of neural weights or datasets (speaking as someone who has dealt with AI in a technical/development capacity). If they’re registered as “Temporary files” from “old installation”, I guess it has to do with some re-training of Windows AI tools. I’m not discussing the merit of those AI tools (whether they’re useful or not to the final user), but AI tools, among all modern features, takes space.

For now, Brave. As for search engines, most of the time I’ve been using DDG (IIRC it’s the default search engine on Brave) but sometimes I prepend “:g” to use Google for searching things that DDG cannot (yet). As a plus, sometimes I also use Marginalia (I set Brave to use Marginalia when I prepend a “:mgn”) in order to search for (g)old content (such as blogosphere content, BBS List archives and so on). If I need to search something deeply, I use Ahmia.

I sincerely do not know as I’m currently unemployed to try and imagine a 4-day work week. I mean, it would be a good thing, more time to dedicate for things you like the most (such as a hobby and/or family and/or pets and/or entertainment and/or spirituality/beliefs/religion and/or education/courses). But it’d only work if there’s any job. With the ongoing situation with AI replacement, profit-eagerness culture of businesses, I don’t really have optimistic views on the future of employment, with or without 4-day work week.

The problem here is not just Chrome (as in Google Chrome) but Chromium, the web engine behind many browsers out there (such as Opera, Vivaldi, Edge, among many many others). For now there are two main web engines available, those being Chromium and Gecko (Firefox, Palemoon and many other Firefox forks). The deprecation of Manifest v2 is a Chromium change that includes (and focuses on) Chrome.

Just out of curiosity: why is nobody recommending Tox?

Websites from alternative networks such as Onion, Freenet, I2P and GNUnet, where speed and privacy are a must-have. Onion webchats, for example, uses neverending-loading with iframes/HTML frames (and another frame/iframe with a standard HTML form), so to not depend on JS.

At the surface web (clearnet), however, it’s harder to find. Even the remaining old sites, from blogosphere and personal tilde websites (those whose URL contained a tilde “~” followed by an username) have some degree of JS.

Unless the registrar accepts cryptocurrencies as a payment, there’s no anonymous way to set up a domain. Even if you fill fake information, you’d still need to use a credit card or bank account that’ll disclose personal info (such as full name, billing address, etc).

When I read the title, I was thinking of something sophisticated such as hidden executable streams inside the MKV container (IIRC, it’s possible to append binary data other than audio, video or subtitles specifically inside a MKV). The “.lnk” trick only works in Windows and, even there, it’s easy to prevent: Windows Explorer > Options > Advanced > find and check “Always show extensions for files” (i can’t really remember the exact label for this option as I’m not a Windows user, but something like this will be there).

Exactly. HDMI contains HDCP when HDMI is streaming something copyrighted, such as Netflix app/in-browser. While they allegedly don’t record Netflix app on TV, they’ll be recording Netflix if it’s been streamed from computer via HDMI.

That means they’re violating HDCP (High definition copy protection)? Do streaming services such as Netflix and Disney, as well as movie studios such as Universal, know this?

Sometimes it’s not “readonly”, but a Javascript thing that “event.preventDefault()” and “return false” during the “onpaste” event. As the event is generally set using elm.addEventListener instead of setting elm.onpaste, it’s not possible to remove the listener, as it’d need the reference for the handler function that was set to handle the mentioned JS event. So simply setting the value directly using elm.value bypasses the onpaste event.

I circumvent that by right-clicking, then choosing “Inspect element”, then switching to the tab “Console”, then typing $0.value = “TheValueIWantToPaste”. If right-clicking is also disabled, I use either F12 or Tools menu > DevTools.
