Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What determines if an action is halted, versus allowed to continue while the action takers are being sued?English
6·15 days agoGenerally, a preliminary injunction will be called for if the action is harmful and irreversible, if delaying it while the question is resolved wouldn’t cause significant problems for the party being sued, and if the requesting party is likely to win the lawsuit anyway.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do American kids rely on the school cafeteria than bringing their own food?English
11·28 days agoThe lunch arrangements will vary greatly by age/grade level. A high school is more likely to have the canteen style while an elementary school is more likely to have the cafeteria style. In either case, bringing a lunch from home is also reasonably common.
No matter how well you understand the passage of time in the abstract it’s a shock the first time you meet a full grown adult, with their own keys and everything, but you can remember what you were doing in the year they were born.

1·2 months agoIn my area, you are notified by mail that you will be in the jury pool during a specific week (5 days). You’re assigned a group number and an individual juror number.
Each day of the week they’ll announce which group numbers will actually need to report to the courthouse the following morning. If your group doesn’t get called in all week then your obligation is satisfied.
If your group number is called then you have to report to the courthouse in the morning. You’ll be sent to a waiting room with all the other people called in that day. They’ll start calling individual juror numbers at random for assignment to cases. If the end of the day arrives and your number wasn’t called then your obligation is satisfied.
If you’re assigned to a case then the judge will ask if serving would be a hardship. If so, you can be excused and replaced with another juror from the waiting room. Being excused from duty does not satisfy your obligation, but it does end your jury duty for the week.
That’s as far as I’ve ever gotten.
As for ignoring the summons, that’s basically contempt of court. You can be subject to fines and jail time more or less at the discretion of the judge.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How does reader mode work?English
281·2 months agoA web page is a combination of a structured document and a separate stylesheet. The same structured document can be styled in radically different ways just by changing the stylesheet. This is how a website can offer different skins, light/dark mode, etc.
Consider this basic HTML document:
<html> <head><title>Test Page</title></head> <body> <p>This is a paragraph.</p> <ul> <li>This is an unordered bullet-point list item</li> <li>This is also a list item</li> </ul> </body> </html>And here’s a stylesheet to make the bullet points square:
ul { list-style-type: square; }Change the stylesheet and you change how the document is rendered. “Reader mode” is just a minimalist stylesheet built into the browser.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•PSA Huggingface is scraping GitHubEnglish
181·2 months agoA number of my repos are listed.
But the weird part is that it also lists a repo I don’t recognize. The repo does actually exist on my github account, but it’s marked as “ignored”, and the description says it was automatically exported from Google Code. The code seems to be a MacOS shareware file encryption tool called “BitClamp”, published circa 2008.
No idea how it got on my account.
