  • Tesla’s had the EV market majority for awhile now. They’re the poster child of more tech in cars, especially when all the other EV’s on the market are following suit to try to play catch-up. Although I agree with you that paywall of car tech that we have had for decades absolutely is not an EV thing, more sensors and cameras specifically is. The other stuff is just terrible marketing firms trying to force subscription services into things that didn’t ever have them before.

Tesla in particular has spearheaded this movement with the self driving car angle and it’s been Ford trying to catch up ever since. All kinds of correlatations between the Ford Mach E and the Tesla models to start with, and that stuff has absolutely followed in the electric Escapes and F105 lightnings. The larger screens, the 360 cameras, the mountains of sensors and LIDAR, Ford’s Blue Cruise nonsense.

Ford wasn’t putting random 15" screens in the dash of their cars before Tesla did it and I’d hazard that most other car companies weren’t either. It’s gotten to the point where it seems like the whole EV industry is trying to imitate Tesla and as far as Ford is concerned I can’t say I’m surprised that they came up with the ads nonsense specifically because that’s par for the course for a company that’s been plagued by the most recalls of any automaker 3 years running or more.

If I’m honest it’s gotten to the point where I’ll pay to fix my decade and a half or more old ice vehicle before I’ll buy any EV. Mini’s got problems with their batteries now, from what my brother tells me a lot of EV’s go through tires and brakes at an accelerated rate and at his dealer it costs something like $500-700 per axle for brake pads and machined rotors. This is on top of the number of electric vehicles being marketed today that have significabt problems that require whole modules or internal battery components to be replaced which is great under warranty but isn’t likely to lead to these vehicles lasting 50-70 years.

I hear about this stuff all the time from the people who fix these cars and a lot of what I hear just makes me not want anything to do with any cars. Unfortunately I don’t have another reliable mode of transportation that I can afford and will allow me to have free time so there’s that.

  • Ford has an abundance of EV’s and has been making EV’s for a couple of decades now. Automakers track all types of information about drivers, and it’s exhausting and all the new EV’s have all kinds of new tech specifically to track drivers just like ICE vehicles. The push for EV’s is pretty strong right now, and that’s the point of my comment. There’s a lot of media telling people that if they’re gonna buy a new car it should be an EV. Teslas are apparently being towed so that law enforcement can use the sensors and cameras to collect information and evidence of crimes. Then this news hits, coupled with an article a couple of weeks ago about how they’ve also patented a way for cop cars to more accurately determine who’s speeding and this whole present is a dystopian nightmare.

You may only want to think about the good that EV’s do, but not all of us are so blindly optimistic. EV’s are one place where Automakers in particular are making new strives to add more tech to vehicles. Yes in a lot of cases more so than ICE vehicles.

Somehow you took “no new cars for me” to mean just EV’s and that makes me question some things about you.

  • Mechanics and some plane Techs have always had to provide their own non-specialty tools. For me this included a computer until COVID hit. When we went back from furlough they announced they were allowing us to keep our own devices or use a company provided one. I didn’t like the initial company provided offering but once they started giving out surface pros I took my personal computer home.

My brother has close to $50K worth of tools and tool boxes. I have probably close to $10K in tools. I have a brother and a sister both who are CDL tractor trailer drivers and they basically had to buy their own rigs. I think there’s subsidies for that but I’d have to ask. Seems like plenty of blue collar workers invest heavily in the tools to do their jobs. It seems reasonable that while collar and tech workers would do the same. Not that they should have to. Just that they would because sometimes even the employer provided specialty tools don’t work for everyone. Just my two cents.

  • Because your questions aren’t germane to the point I was making. In fact the first question “how would you prevent " moderation” from becoming censorship" is literally answered by my second comment. Facebook already does this with Facebook messenger. But even if they didn’t, Signal has functions to allow encryption.

So what you’re saying is, criminals who aren’t using encryption (on a platform where encryption features are readily available) don’t deserve to be moderated on a platform where their messages are using a company’s cloud bandwidth. Does the company not have rights? And if we agree that the company has rights then they also have to follow the law.

Yes there are people who’s jobs are to (not prevent because police and policing is reactionary not preventative) investigate, and try criminals in a court of law for crimes). This was a poor question to ask. You’re literally acting like we don’t employ thousands of people over various social media and messaging platforms to review and moderate things like CSAM.

The gist for me is criminals gonna do criminal things but at the end of the day these are our public spaces and just because I don’t want to be surveilled in public or live in a police state doesn’t mean that I want criminals not to be prosecuted for crimes they commit just because someone cares more about their bottom line than they do about moderation of a messaging platform they provide to the public.

We aren’t talking about end to end encrypted messages here. We’re talking about messages with no such encryption that can be viewed by anyone. There are literally public groups being used by Terrorist organizations on Signal. And while Signal has repeatedly refused to give up encryption keys for the ones that are using encryption (as they should), any criminal that isn’t is not protected by it and should be moderated.

  • Given nothing at all, could the LLM quantify or develop the tools and systems we use to categorize such species? Could it discover a species? The spirit of the question is, humans have been able to look at the world around them, using data we gain from our 5 senses and the scientific method to do this. The LLM cannot develop the same information gathering or classification, diagnostic, or scientific method skills in order to do the same. It relies solely on what we provide it and can only operate within those parameters. It does not have senses of its own. That’s the point. Go look up how we have learned to quantify sapience. Because what you’re saying is that you (a small data point out of trillions or more) can’t do a thing a computer can do, so it must be able to think.

  • Nah fam. You’re comparing this thing to yourself and other humans because to you it sounds like us. “Sounds like” is the phrasing conspiracy theorists use to try to make correlations regardless of whether they make sense or not without filling in any actual facts. Either you know and understand how they work and are researching this and have a valid rebuttal or you don’t. But an assumption does not make anything you said fact. People who are researching this have already refuted this claim.

You don’t even know what the word “will” would mean in this context, or that it would provide an LLM with the kind of consciousness required to be sapient. So can we stop arguing if you just admit that you like using LLM’s so you have a bias and a poor understanding of what they are and aren’t.
