Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would realistically happen if universal healthcare went into effect in the US and healthcare was no longer tied to jobs?English
0·10 hours agoI’ve never been to the UK, I’ve only heard it’s similar to the situation in AU second hand from people who have actually lived there.
For example when I needed to see a psychiatrist it took 18 months, a rheumatologist took 24 months, and general medicine physician took 20 months. My ex’s psychiatrist took 12 and psychologist took 6, only because it was a critical emergency. I’m glad you had a good experience though

2·13 hours agoI would probably do it for 6 month’s income as a lump sum to fix that 1 thing. I wouldn’t go back on payroll that’s for sure

02·13 hours agoIt’s been joked that Australia is half socialist, and I kind of agree with it. Never been to the UK so I can’t say much about that.

01·14 hours agoOf course, but if more socialist countries struggle to justify increasing the funding of the already massive cost of healthcare, I doubt that the states would manage a well funded one. In fact it may even be sabotaged. But theoretically if it had good funding then yes most of those problems go away.

21·14 hours agoIt does feel like a cult doesn’t it? Like the church of the steel God or something. Silicon valley practically performing summoning rituals on their PC’s to try and create sentience ASAP

18·15 hours agoI think initially there’d be a huge spike of people going to the doctor for problems they’ve just been living with because they can’t get it looked at. The healthcare system would get hugely overwhelmed because I’m sure they wouldn’t prepare properly for this.
Long term, wait times would be months to years like in the UK. The system would likely never catch up. You’d probably end up with a private expensive sector due to the huge demand* to “skip the queue”, and a public sector if you’re willing to wait 2 years. Oh look, it’s turned into Australia’s system.
We don’t really need speculation at this point because we already know what the pros and cons are. There would be huge economic and health benefits from health problems being prevented rather than letting them get bad. But people would go to hospital for a common cold and scraped knee or drug seeking behaviour, wasting precious healthcare resources. The costs would be astronomical, subsidised by the private sector. Etc.
I loved that game, I 100%'d it. Not sure about achievements though, those kinds of games usually have dumb achievements (looking at you Ori with the speed run and no hit achievements)
That’s every purchase in 2026 unfortunately. If you just buy something carelessly it’ll be bad and not work
:/
- Nier Automata (yes I seriously haven’t played this yet)
- Silksong (yes… I know)
- Doom dark ages
- Ghost of Tsushima
- Hades 2
More obscure games
- Mewgenics
- Cozy Grove
- Find Matt’s Cats (from the dev of Epic Battle Fantasy… If you haven’t played them he’s made more games since early flash days)
- Manor Lords
- Mount and Blade 2
I really loved grim dawn, I did a summoner build and had a great time then suddenly hit a wall in difficulty where the A.I. ignored my pets and assassinated me making my build completely unusable. But it was a great 20 hours, felt like my first Diablo 2 run where you just completely fuck up your build but enjoy it anyway

13·1 day agoIn the app I use I can “tag” people’s usernames and keep track of them across posts. It’s interesting to bump into “angry cyclist” being aggressive again about a completely random topic. It kind of puts it into perspective that it might just be how this person sees the world, especially if they’re very active and keep showing up. It feels very much like older forums where the same people keep turning up, which is something I didn’t realise I missed.

1·1 day agoI had to open it, then hold tap on the image and click “play animation”, so it’s definitely app dependant
I bought extra heads when I bought the toothbrush because they always stop making them and forcing me to replace it… Instead the charging dock thing was completely corroded and there’s no way to charge the actual toothbrush anymore… I miss the replaceable battery ones at this point

12·2 days agoYeah exactly. I set up Zorin OS for my family who are not tech savvy at all. It was a bit different at first but they said they felt much “calmer” using Linux. Modern Windows feels like trying to read an article online or watch a YouTube video without an ad blocker.

1·2 days agoI remember playing original Skyrim and the horse carriage getting stuck at the gates. I restart. The carriage suddenly flips up into the sky like it hit a landmine. Restart. The whole I’m like why can’t I please just get off the carriage and run off into the wilderness lol. Like Fallout NV did it the best. Just yep thanks doc bye, I’mma go that’ta way

You’d think so based on how quickly it died, but it was a $70 USD (on 50% discount) “Colgate Electric Toothbrush Series 2”. Only lasted 12 months. And no I didn’t get it wet, but it does live in the bathroom (like all toothbrushes).
