Ground.news is my go-to source, and they have a very useful blind spot feature which specifically shows you stories you might not be aware of based on your political leanings

This is exactly what I do and then I use communities that I see popping up regularly or that look interesting for my homepage. If I’m just scrolling cuz I’m bored I’m on all. If I don’t have much time I just have the home feed

Is they’re a reason you don’t want to just use tailscale for this? it’s incredibly easy to set up and does exactly what you’re trying to do.
