13·2 hours agoVacuum is a perfect thermal insulator. The only real losses are radiative.
Edit: From Stefan-Boltzmann: up to (not sure about emissivities, but could be down to a fraction of 10% of this) 100kW for a black body of 1m diameter at 1000C.

Technology@lemmy.world•We own the hardware, but not the experience anymore — Big Tech keeps building smarter, more connected devices, but the user experience feels more intrusive, more confusing, and less humanEnglish
11·4 hours agoIt is not user experience, it is user manipulation. We are so so far beyond Stallman’s warnings about enslavement through corporate software design.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•How We Lost Communication to EntertainmentEnglish
5·2 days agoNo, that is precisely the point. There is a line to be drawn over that continuum (e.g. you don’t go to talks, town halls and lectures to be entertained and be kept hooked on cliffhangers). The fact that everyone is competing for attention these days and that communicators have to become entertainers is a different problem. Look at Marshall McLuhan, Neil Postman…and Habermas too.

Europe@feddit.org•Heritage Foundation openly calls for end of European UnionEnglish
351·6 days agoI mean…the reason Europe is weathering this better (for now) is because we have 28 different independenty timed governments with different cultures, multiple parties (and coalitions) and media spheres for 500 million people (and we’re slightly better at recognizing and organizing against fascism because of what it has already done to us).
Y’all have one race between two parties, one of which is heavily compromised, for 330 million people in a single winner-takes-all race for an emperor-like post. It is like the system was designed to fail.
looks like shitstain in chief’s paraputinist talking points keep cycling…Brazil, Venezuela, South Africa, Nigeria, Canada, Greenland, Mexico, EU, Ukraine, Palestine, UK, India, China…round and round it goes as it all flushes down the drain.
Different things were perfected at different stages of development and technology in history and most traditionalists just struggle to live up to that level of dedication e.g. politics, theatre, music.

3·14 days agoIt is still their fault for complacently failing to plan ahead 25 years ago and resting on their ICE laurels until the competition ate their lunch. The rest of the world will keep buying chinese cars and Europe will lag behind forever in this.

11·16 days agoHow do you feel watching it all happen in Hungary, US,
… Italy (we’ll see, depending on US backing), Venezuela, Turkey on the way too I guess and looming in UK/DE/FR. It’s spreading like a contagion in very different societies with different inequalities, safety nets, work cultures and subgroups…I blame the social media format for favouring illiberal ideas through the way it was engineered…
We could do in Europe what the US does, which is ask if you’re an anarchist or terrorist, in this case: “did russia invade Ukraine illegally, do you consider it a crime, or should russia redraw european borders unilaterally?”. If they say yes: ban them, if they say no…and later are found saying yes: ban them for perjury on an official entry form…
