In that case there’s a reason to have a more random sample, and not volunteers, and you are fulfilling the right of the defendant to a jury of their peers that you might need to use too at some point. But I guess one should be able to opt out of it and then be tried by the judge instead.
That’s harsh, though I guess you could argue it’s no worse than jury service as it’s done here in the UK which is at least two weeks usually.
