I’m still trying to get used to Lemmy; the main thing confusing me is the federated bit.
I just want to access Lemmy and its content; how do I do that? Currently I’m just going to old.lemmy.world and using that as a starting point.
Is there another instance you would recommend as the default one?
The two main reasons I ask are:
-
I want to know if there are things I am simply missing out on and there’s a better way to browse Lemmy.
-
I really don’t like cloudflare and have it disabled in Javascript. I don’t want to leave it enabled for lemmy.world.

I apologize, I have another follow up question (again all stemming from failing to grasp an intuitive understanding of federation) to point 1.
I’m fairly sure I was able to sign on lemmy.cafe and make a post in a community over there.
Basically I am trying to understand why was I able to do that there and not at slrpnk.net. Is it something unique to lemmy.cafe? Something unique to slrpnk.net?
Pretty sure you misremember, as Lemmy.cafe also requires registration to be used. There are some independant frontends (web-clients) that can be used with different Lemmy instances, but for password security reasons I strongly recommend to only use the ones hosted by the instance you have your account on, because otherwise you are basically sharing your password with whoever runs that frontend.
Hi,
I’m sorry to bother you again, but I have a question regarding old.slrpnk.net
Other instances using the old. format, they have an expand button. So you can quickly see text posts or an image and see if it worth engaging with further.
I haven’t been able to see that in old.slrpnk.net. I’m wondering if there is a way to add it in the preferences or something that I’m missing?
Thanks and I apologize again for all the questions.
We have that too. Maybe the new fork that we are using is doing that slightly different from other versions and that somehow breaks in your browser?
Two things, you were right; my misunderstanding was due to my failure to have an intuitive understanding of defederation.
What happened was that I signed on in lemmy.world to make a post on lemmy.cafe (through lemmy.world).
My second question: I tried all weekend to access old.slrpnk.net
But the site was either really really slow (like a page would pop up after a minute or two) or would just result in an error.
Is this a problem on my end? Or is something going on that should be sorted out soonish?
Thanks again and keep up the good work.
Yeah, there is some issue on our end, but sadly it isn’t clear what might be causing it.
