You can also set up a daily spending limit, so they can’t buy a car with your card. If you need a bigger purchase raise the limit for a day, then lower it back to a reasonable amount.

This was a thing for ages. Before NFC payment became common they added covers to ATM holes:

So when you retrieve your cash at a machine you could be already skimmed there. And if you pay with cash you can get counterfeit notes as change… If you see the world this way you can’t really do anything, bad guys are everywhere. Use a bit of common sense, check your balance frequently, and disable your card if you see something fishy.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•New Community Rule: "No low-effort posts. This is subjective and will largely be determined by the community member reports."English
352·17 days agoI’ve seen slightly offtopic posts deleted here, even after some interesting conversation in the comments. I think Lemmy is small, and it could help the platform if conversations and posts are preserved even if they are not 100% on topic. But I respect the work of mods, it’s their decision how they run a community, even if I don’t agree with them all time.
But just as a backup, if things take an unexpected turn, here are some similar, but much less active communities:
This is also to the “low effort” posters, if you disagree with your post’s removal you can post it to other similar communities.

4·20 days agoDesktop firefox has a button in the rightclick menu “copy clean link” or something. But usually you can delete everything from the first & or ? sign. They are called query strings and if you learn how they work it’s easy to spot the tracking ones.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Gamepad latency of the XBOX series S controllerEnglish
3·2 months agoI have 3, played through multiple platformer games with friends, but I haven’t experienced any noticeable latency, I use them only with bluetooth. I also use xpadneo
Have you tried updating the firmware from a windows VM? You need the xbox accessories app there, I think you can upgrade the firmware without a microsoft account. Connect the controller with a wire and pass it through to the VM, and upgrade from the app there.
I also needed to pair it first in the VM, without it BT didn’t work. I just followed everything from the ArchWiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Gamepad#Connect_Xbox_Wireless_Controller_with_Bluetooth
I haven’t followed this software and company before, what do you mean, what is the catch?
Adobe doesn’t offer any of its software for free except acrobat reader, where you get nagged about paid features constantly, but it’s easy to ignore.
Why shouldn’t I recommend this over cracked Photoshop? Its features seems like closer to PS than Gimp or Krita.
There is a topography plugin, you have to pay for it, but it’s free in the fdroid version: https://osmand.net/docs/user/plugins/topography/
There is also a topo map style, similar to OpenTopoMap, but no contourlines: https://osmand.net/docs/user/map/vector-maps/#topo
Mapy is another osm based map app (except for Czechia, map data is different there), some of my hiking friends love it, it’s not foss at all: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cz.seznam.mapy
Osmand is not fully foss as well.
Following Trendy Toots bot made my mastodon experience much better: https://mastodon.social/@trendytoots

Videos@lemmy.world•Phineas explains nuclear power (and how fear mongering ruined it)
71·3 months agoI’m totally pro nuclear, but this is a terrible video.
They don’t speak about that the problem with nuclear waste is, it will remain radioactive for millions of years. How do you tell someone one million years in the future that they shouldn’t dig a hole where we just put our waste? How can you be sure there won’t be an earthquake there in the next 1000000 years?
For reference, our ancestors learned the control of fire about a million years ago, just to see what timescale we are speaking about.
The point is the long term handling of nuclear waste is still an unsolved problem, the current solution of putting it sealed underground is a temporary solution, until we can figure out something better.
Ars has some nice articles on the topic: https://arstechnica.com/science/2022/08/solving-the-rock-hard-problem-of-nuclear-waste-disposal/

This is a known issue on some default roms, more info and tips here, but I guess you already tried them: https://dontkillmyapp.com/
