I like it and want to see it spread. I think if you tally up all the deaths indirectly caused by air pollution from fossil fuels they’ll exceed the people killed in nuclear accidents by orders of magnitude.

I noticed this too. Some reviews were complaining that Fox is abrasive and more self-interested, and I’m like duh he’s a mercenary.

If someone is unfamiliar with Japanese and Mandarin, they’re not going to be able to readily distinguish the two in writing. They don’t know, for example, that Japanese intersperses the Kanji with Kana, while Mandarin uses the hanzi logograms exclusively. But Chinese characters are very distinct from Latin or other Western writing systems, so if they see a sample containing Hanzi/Kanji, they’ll jump to whatever they’re familiar with.

I imagine a Chinese person with little to no exposure to Western writing would easily mistake French and English because they share so many words, even though they’re not closely related (Romance vs Germanic).

Can’t help you with music but I share your frustration when it comes to being suckered into consuming AI slop. My entire adult life, text to speech has been a constant part of my day, so I pride myself on being able to sniff out when the person talking isn’t a person.

Even with these AI voices I’ll eventually catch an odd stutter or wonky prosody, but it may take a good minute or more of listening, and when I do figure it out I feel like I’ve been scammed.

No proof of this but I suspect it started with Twitter as a way to get around the character limit. Yes the accessibility or lack thereof is frustrating.

The Reddit APIcolypse of 2023. I came crawling back to Reddit a few weeks ago though. Lemmy doesn’t have the size to support the kind of niches that Reddit has, and Reddit has a much broader user base as well, so conversations are more interesting because I can’t predict what 80% of the responses to any topic will be.

Importantly, they tend to fly private aircraft, which I have recently learned are not as safe as commercial airliners. Commercial flights are subject to countless safety checks and have redundancies for days.

The titan sub failed in part because stockton Rush (I couldn’t think of a more posh name if I tried) assumed the similarly impeccable record of submarines was due to something other than scrupulous safety margins.

Because I like the idea of Lemmy and the fediverse, so I hang on despite its issues.

Yes, but this is just the cherry on top of a steaming turd sundae of other issues I have with Lemmy that I won’t rehash again here. It’s not like my complaining will change anything anyway.

Compare these reactions to the Ubisoft subreddit, which granted are going to skew fanward. On /r/games the conversation seems to be mixed, with a few dancing on his grave, most expressing dismay at his death while still acknowledging the harm he did to the company and industry as a whole. Plenty of people are simply discussing the dangers of small aircraft.

This is why I hate Lemmy sometimes. “It’s wrong to wish people dead, except for ‘them’. ‘They’ are fare game.” It’s the same BS we’ve been doing for the whole history of our miserable species.

Since you’re just sharing things within a small group, I think it’s safe to give out your IP or a domain pointing to it. However, you need to put your services behind a DMZ. Make a separate VLAN on your network and put the Pis behind it. Make sure traffic from your private LAN can enter the DMZ but nothing from the DMZ can go to your LAN unless it’s return traffic for a session started in your LAN. If a machine in your DMZ is compromised, it shouldn’t affect your LAN.

It goes back to what I said earlier, that yes you can do what you need to if you’re willing to put in the effort. But I don’t want to have to build a hammer every time I need to drive in a nail, even if I know how to build that hammer. I want to grab an already working hammer from my toolbox.

I think its no accident that the majority of desktop Linux users are software devs. Using Linux at home in a way serves as job credentials, because you have to be intimately familiar with the OS in a way that Windows and (especially) Mac users don’t have to be just to get by.

My latest (and so far longest) streak of daily driving Linux was with Mint. The bluetooth worked perfectly out of the box for the first time… and then never again. My headphones would simply never pair, and my Wacom tablet and xbox controller would constantly connect and disconnect, causing popups every time it did, and no amount of terminal magic seemed to solve the problem. Of course that’s not what pushed me back to Windows, as always that honor goes to the lack of a usable screen reader and magnifier.

Linux works great as a server precisely because you’re supposed to know what you’re doing, but a consumer-facing OS is supposed to be fool proof.

I’m gonna sound like everyone I complain about here, so feel free to ignore me. How did Proxmox break? I’ve been hosting a bunch of Proxmox containers on a 15 year old crappy laptop and it’s been smooth sailing for at least a year and a half.

Not trying to shun you for using windows or discount your personal experience with Proxmox or anything, just genuinely curious. If you prefer windows, use it.

Are you hosting on win server? I’m genuinely curious, not trying to shill Linux though I prefer it on the server side, believe me I’ve been on the receiving end of that for desktop Linux. How do you manage it? Do you have your home LAN set up as an active directory domain? Do you use mostly Powershell or the GUI? What do you have running on it? It just seems like everything on the server side assumes you’re using Linux and the only stuff that runs on Win server is stuff made by Microsoft like MS SQL server or IIS.

Also, information hygiene here is terrible. No mods seem to care.

I think a combo of better moderation and a larger and more diverse user base is what Lemmy needs to succeed. The former is hard to achieve because you have to straddle the line between too lax and too strict, and everyone’s going to have a different idea where that line is. I get the feeling people just copy-pasted all the popular subreddits without enforcing the rules that gave each sub its identity. Askreddit was about open-ended questions meant to elicit discussion or shared experiences. Nostupidquestions was about seeking information. Showerthoughts was about quick realizations or observations. Mildlyinteresting was about odd little coincidences or anomalies you run into going about your day. But here on Lemmy there’s no quality control so they’re all filled with varying degrees of ragebait.

Growing the user base is even harder because the “politics is everything” folks repel any normal human being who just wants to talk about Pokemon.
