  • Rewired, replumbed, insulated, and reroofed the house. Installed an Enphase System Controller 3 along with an IQ Combiner 5, and a pair of IQ5P batteries, have three IQ8A microinverters hooked to 400w bifacial panels so far. Have a total of 18 panels to install as I’m working on the racking. Also need replace the windows and a few other things but there is a lot of stuff in progress. Been a huge benefit and QOL boost overall.

Learning to Scuba dive helped my mental health a ton becoming a widower. Diving in general had been great for me, I just wish I could go more often.

  • Which one? Lol.

TrueNAS is mostly via the webgui but I use SSH when needed.

I have two Ubuntu 26.04LTS VM’s running on TrueNAS. One is going to be my web host the other is for FrigateNVR and local AI processing. They are both managed via SSH. The web host has a FIDO2 ssh key for access, the other is a standard key and is not web accessible. Both can be accessed via remote desktop when at home.

Docker containers are managed via DockHand. I have about 50 containers running across the above hosts right now.

HomeAssistant is managed via the webgui and SSH when needed. It runs on its own hardware (Odroid N2+)

My traveling local host/ap/dhcp server is primarily managed over USB via SSH. Files are managed via SFTP.

  • I just use steam. The remote play works fine. You can actually access the full desktop by going into the steam software menu. My desktop is Ubuntu Cinnamon 24.04LTS, ryzen 5800x, 9070xt, 32gb ram, and 4tb nvme. My client is an Asus ROG G75VW - i7 3610QM, GTX 660M running Ubuntu Budgie 24.04LTS.

I’ve played games, edited video, and other standard pc stuff this way without issue. I have two monitors connected to my desktop, one is a 32" 1440p 144hz landscape orientation via display port the other is a 24" 1080p 60 hz portrait orientation via HDMI. So can’t say much about resolution output and frequency compatibility.

  • If you get to a certain number of people maybe. Or location or who knows what.

I have a YouTube page where I post scuba videos. I want to use it to fund a non-profit. I have two websites related to the video’s plus a Facebook, and a bunch of other sites. When I make a post on my site it sends a teaser post with a link to those sites. I don’t play anything. But I had to do a ton of jumping through hoops to do it. There are services that do this for a fee. Maybe the fee is for them to set something similar up. But from my understanding Facebook loves links because their crawler hits my site to take a snapshot of the post for their users, wink wink ai bots to crawl. It’s the same thing for Google. The more they crawl the more they gain in training data.

  • You can still get the Google Coral (both the USB dongle and M.2/PCIe versions), but Google has effectively abandoned the official drivers. You’ll need to use community-maintained DKMS drivers if you go with the PCIe version on newer Linux kernels.

If you want a modern alternative, look into the Hailo-8 or Hailo-8L M.2 AI accelerators. They plug right into an open M.2 slot and natively integrate into recent versions of Frigate. Keep in mind that these accelerators ONLY process object detection inference - they do not handle video decoding.

For video decoding, your OptiPlex 7070’s Intel CPU has Quick Sync Video (QSV). You can pass /dev/dri through to your container, and Intel iGPU hardware acceleration will handle decoding the RTSP streams with minimal CPU overhead.

If you prefer an all-in-one approach, an Intel or Nvidia GPU can handle both video decoding and object detection (via OpenVINO or TensorRT), but a Micro PC limits your physical expansion options.

Storing recordings on a TrueNAS share over NFS or SMB works just fine. Mount the NFS share directly in Proxmox or the VM host, then pass the directory through to your Docker container.

  • I’m in the process of remaking my “Doom Pumpkin” for Halloween as well. If connects to my HomeAssistant setup and has four 12v car horns, a speaker to play audio, LED’s for eyes, a big red arcade button for a nose, motion sensors in front and back to interact with kids (it tells them it farts fireballs if they walk behind it) and an anti theft mode where if it’s picked up the horns start going off. Press the button and a random sequence of horns will go off. It also will randomly set a horn off if it hasn’t been touched in a while. And when it senses someone in front it will taunt them to press the button. Since it’s built in to HomeAssistant I can set when certain functions work and for a couple days before Halloween it will be outside taunting the neighborhood during the day.

The first version was a couple horns powered by an arduino uno and would just randomly activate 2 horns in different ways. The new one added two more horns (one is a little beep beep forklift horn, the other is an oooogah horn) to go with the high tone and low tone car horn.

  • I’m carrying an S26 Ultra and wouldn’t mind if it was 3 times thicker. I regularly carry a Tab S8+ around when I am going to the store so I can look things up or take down ideas.

I also had one of the Motorola bag phones in the mid 90’s as my emergency car phone.

Would I carry around a bag phone today… probably not. I haven’t really spoken on the phone since April and it’s been about 2 years since anyone other than my other half has called me but I was tired of the junk calls so I turned off receiving calls from any number not in my contacts list.

  • I had a kid I met when I was homeless for a while. He was a regular fixture in my life and a ton of fun to be around. But about 5 years later he had his wife and a girlfriend pregnant at the same time. He already had two children with the wife (and when the first one came along when they were dating I had told him “Don’t get her pregnant”), couldn’t hold a steady job, possibly had other iligitimate children, and was living in a crappy nasty motel but he had a game console (can’t remember if it was a PS3 or Xbox 360) and a TV to game on so he didn’t care.

I told him I couldn’t have that in my life anymore, every time something went wrong he would do something stupid. Last I heard the girlfriend was going to move back to get family in Florida, he ended up going who knows where for a while then ended up back in town for a little bit around the time I was moving away. The wife had family there so is likely still in town. I kinda Facebook stalked him a couple months ago (through my other half as I don’t actually use Facebook) and found he is likely living in Georgia and working for a traveling carnival.

He was probably the last person I knew and called a friend. It’s been a little over 15 years.
